The South Korean defence ministry has declined to comment.

Following news of Mr Kim's death, South Korea put its armed forces on high alert and said the country was on a crisis footing. But his tight control of the country, and his creation of a nuclear arsenal, has meant his death has caused political shockwaves around the region too.

His presumed successor, Kim Jong-un, is largely unknown outside the secretive state, and countries throughout the region are watching closely for any instability in the transition of power.

The announcer, wearing black, struggled to keep back the tears as she said he had died of physical and mental over-work.

The KCNA later reported that he had died of a "severe myocardial infarction along with a heart attack" at 08:30 local time on Saturday (23:30 GMT Friday).

He had been on a train at the time, for one of his "field guidance" tours, KCNA said.

The state news agency said a funeral would be held in Pyongyang on 28 December and Kim Jong-un would head the funeral committee. A period of national mourning has been declared from 17 to 29 December.

Images from inside the secretive state showed people in the streets of Pyongyang weeping at the news of his death.

Ruling party members in one North Korean county were shown by state TV banging tables and crying out loud, the AFP news agency reports.

"I can't believe it," a party member named as Kang Tae-Ho was quoted as saying. "How can he go like this? What are we supposed to do?"

Another, Hong Sun-Ok, said: "He tried so hard to make our lives much better and he just left like this."

KCNA said people were "convulsing with pain and despair" at their loss, but would unite behind his successor Kim Jong-un.

North Korea

Population about 23 million
One million-strong army thought to be world's fifth largest
Manufacturing output mainly geared to military's demands
All aspects of daily life strictly controlled by government
Daily food shortages; acute power cuts and poor infrastructure
Guide to North Korea
Country where pavements are washed by hand
Life inside the North Korean bubble
Kim Jong-il: The cinephile despot
"All party members, military men and the public should faithfully follow the leadership of comrade Kim Jong-un and protect and further strengthen the unified front of the party, military and the public," the news agency said.

Little is known about Kim Jong-un. He was educated in Switzerland, is aged in his late 20s and is believed to be Kim Jong-il's third son - born to Mr Kim's reportedly favourite wife, the late Ko Yong-hui.

Kim Jong-un was unveiled as his father's likely successor just over a year ago. Many had expected to see this process further consolidated in 2012.

'Turning point'
South Korea - which remains technically at war with the north - urged people to "go about their usual economic activities" on Monday, while putting the military on alert.

President Lee Myung-Bak spoke to US President Barack Obama by telephone and they "agreed to closely co-operate and monitor the situation together", a South Korean presidential spokesman said.

Reaction from Washington was muted, with the White House saying it was "closely monitoring" reports of the death.

The US remained "committed to stability on the Korean peninsula, and to the freedom and security of our allies", it said in a statement.

China said it was "distressed" to hear the news of his death. "We express our grief about this and extend our condolences to the people of North Korea," foreign ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu was quoted by Xinhua news agency as saying.

Analysis

Donald Gregg
Former US ambassador to South Korea
Kim Jong-il's death should not have come as a complete surprise to anyone, given his tenuous health.

But it is safe to say that the North Koreans would have very much preferred that he lived one more year, so that in 2012, the 100th anniversary of the birth of Kim Il-sung, his father, Kim Jong-il would have been on hand to pay homage to "the Great Leader".

Now that lot will fall to Kim Jong-un, Kim Jong-il's youngest son who has been put forward as the natural and fully prepared successor to his father.

Will Kim's death aid ties with US?
Analysts say that with the process of transition from father to son incomplete, Mr Kim's death could herald "very unstable times" in North Korea.

"We have to be very worried because whenever there is domestic instability North Korea likes to find an external situation to divert the attention away from that - including indulging in provocation," Professor Lee Jung-hoon, specialising in international relations at Yonsei University in Seoul, told the BBC.

Christopher Hill, former US representative to the six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear programme, said all parties needed to "keep cool heads".

Britain's Foreign Secretary William Hague said it could be a "turning point" for North Korea to engage more closely with the international community.

Kim Jong-il inherited the leadership of North Korea from his father Kim Il-sung.

Shortly after he came to power in 1994, a severe famine caused by ill-judged economic reforms and poor harvests left an estimated two million people dead.

His regime has been harshly criticised for human rights abuses and is internationally isolated because of its pursuit of nuclear weapons.

Under Mr Kim's leadership, funds have been channelled to the military and in 2006 North Korea conducted its first nuclear test. It followed that up with a second one three years later. Multinational talks aimed at disarming North Korea have been deadlocked for months.

He had reportedly been in poor health since suffering a stroke in August 2008.

What is your reaction to the death of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il?
Occupy Wall Street

Occupy Wall Street is an ongoing series of demonstrations in New York City[5] based in Zuccotti Park, formerly "Liberty Plaza Park". The protest was originally[6] called for by the Canadian activist[7] group Adbusters; it took inspiration from the Arab Spring movement (particularly the Tahrir Square protests in Cairo, which initiated the 2011 Egyptian Revolution), the Libyan Civil War, and from the Spanish Indignants.[8][9]
The participants of the event are mainly protesting against social and economic inequality, corporate greed, and the influence of corporate money and lobbyists on government, among other concerns.[10][11] Adbusters states that, "Beginning from one simple demand – a presidential commission to separate money from politics – we start setting the agenda for a new America."[12]
By 7 October, similar demonstrations had been held in Washington, D.C.,[13] Los Angeles,[14] San Francisco,[15] San Jose,[16] Boston, Chicago, Houston[17], Philadelphia, Miami,[18] Salt Lake City,[19] Portland, Maine,[20] Jersey City,[21][22] Trenton,[21] Portland, Oregon,[23] Seattle,[24] Denver,[24][25][26][27] Charlotte, Kansas City, MO,[28] Austin,[29] Ann Arbor,[30] Cleveland,[31] Dallas,[32] Minneapolis,[33] Sacramento[34], Tampa[35][36][37], and Atlanta.[38] On 15 October, protests are expected in at least twenty-five cities outside the U.S. "stretching from Hong Kong to Buenos Aires, Dublin to Madrid."[39]Background

In mid 2011, the Canadian-based group Adbusters Media Foundation, best known for its advertisement-free anti-consumerist magazine called Adbusters, proposed a peaceful occupation of Wall Street to protest corporate influence on democracy, address a growing disparity in wealth, and the absence of legal repercussions behind the recent global financial crisis.[6] According to the senior editor of the magazine, “[they] basically floated the idea in mid-July into our [email list] and it was spontaneously taken up by all the people of the world, it just kind of snowballed from there.”[6]Activists from Anonymous also encouraged its followers to take part in the protest which increased the attention it received calling protesters to "flood lower Manhattan, set up tents, kitchens, peaceful barricades and occupy Wall Street".[40][8][41][42]
Although it was originally proposed by Adbusters magazine, the demonstration is leaderless.[43] Other groups began to join the protest, including the NYC General Assembly and U.S. Day of Rage.[44] The protests have brought together people of many political positions. A report in CNN suggested that protesters "got really lucky" when gathering at Zuccotti Park since it was private property and police could not legally force them to move off of it; in contrast, police have authority to remove protesters without permits from city parks.[45]
Prior to the protest's beginning on September 17, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a press conference, "People have a right to protest, and if they want to protest, we'll be happy to make sure they have locations to do it."[44]Overview of goals

The protesters set up camp in Zuccotti Park. Locals and protesters call it "Liberty Plaza", the park's former name. Brookfield Properties, the owner of the public space, instituted new rules on September 26 to make life more difficult for the people staying in the park.[46]
Perceptions vary as to the specific goals of the movement.[47] According to Adbusters, a primary protest organizer, the central demand of the protest is that President Obama "ordain a Presidential Commission tasked with ending the influence money has over our representatives in Washington".[12] Early protest organizers and hacker group, Anonymous took aim at President Obama for being responsible for the continuing influence corporations and banks have on American policy.[48][49] Liberal commentator Michael Moore had suggested that this is not like any other protest but this protest represents a variety of demands with a common statement about government corruption and the excessive influence of big business and the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans on U.S. laws and policies.[50]
Peripheral demands such as raising taxes on the rich, raising taxes on corporations, ending corporate welfare, support for trade unionism, and protecting Medicare and Social Security in their traditional forms are expressed by some participants.[51] Occupy Maine is asking for an investment in public transportation infrastructure and the return home of Maine National Guardsmen from wars overseas.[20] Other protesters are calling for an audit or elimination of the Federal Reserve, affordable healthcare, dismantling the military-industrial complex and to end all wars.[52][53][54][47]
Despite the various lists of demands, some non-partisan groups and supporters of the protest have expressed concern that the proposed agenda items are not addressing some of the root causes. Political activist, Lawrence Lessig argues that the problems on Wall Street have been caused by corruption in Washington that has been perpetuated by a deep conflict of interests. He further states that because both parties depend on Wall Street's money to fund their campaigns, they will not dare to cross the interests of Wall Street.[55][11][56][57]
Public discussion, development and commentary
The desire to form a more coherent agenda was evident around the 13th day of the occupation, with sentiment in the encampment generally split along two lines: those who want to draft focused demands about the unequal distribution of wealth in the United States; and those who want the protest to remain amorphous and to grow through spectacle.[58] Participatory online discussion forums have been emerging for citizens to submit and vote for specific agenda items.[59][60]
A "proposal" forum post on occupywallst.org[61] submitted by a single user was misreported as an official list of demands.[62] According to the admin-edited forum post, "[the] content was not published by the OccupyWallSt.org collective, nor was it ever proposed or agreed to on a consensus basis with the NYC General Assembly. There is NO official list of demands."[63]
The protest has been criticized for its lack of focus and actionable agenda. In an article that was critical of the protesters, Ginia Bellafante wrote in The New York Times:
"The group’s lack of cohesion and its apparent wish to pantomime progressivism rather than practice it knowledgeably is unsettling in the face of the challenges so many of its generation face – finding work, repaying student loans, figuring out ways to finish college when money has run out."[64][65]
Glenn Greenwald responded to this criticism, writing,
"Does anyone really not know what the basic message is of this protest: that Wall Street is oozing corruption and criminality and its unrestrained political power—in the form of crony capitalism and ownership of political institutions—is destroying financial security for everyone else?"[66]
A small grassroots political party suggested the protesters could call for a 50-cent Wall Street stock-trade surcharge, which the party's founder told United Press International would boost the U.S. economy at least $350 billion a year. "The Republicans say we don't want to spend more money because it will incur more debt," Light Party founder Da Vid Raphael said. "So where is the money? On Wall Street."[67]
On October 1, former White House adviser Van Jones, announced he and other progressives would support and build upon the wall street protests and launch an "October Offensive" to "Rebuild the Dream" by focusing on job creation.[68][69]
New York Magazine conducted a survey of 100 protest participants. When asked about their view of capitalism, 46% believe that capitalism "isn’t fundamentally evil; it just needs to be regulated," 37% believe that capitalism "can’t be saved; it’s inherently immoral," and 17% did not answer the question. When asked if they voted in the 2010 midterm election, 39% answered "yes," 55% answered "no," and 5% answered "no, but only because I wasn’t 18."[70]
Participants

In late September, the Occupy Wall Street protest spread to Boston and other cities
Demographics
The protests have brought together people of many political positions including liberals,[71] political independents,[72] socialists,[71] conservatives,[72] anarchists,[72] and libertarians.[71] Religious beliefs vary as well including, but not limited to, Christians, Jews, Muslims and atheists.[71]
Participant organization
While the organization calls itself leaderless, the protest in Zuccotti Park has discernable "organizers", according to analysis by Fordham University Sociologist Heather Gautney,[73] as well as "stations" that coordinate protest activities and functions(e.g., medical, food, legal, media, security), as well as organizational processes for decisionmaking.[74]
Organizational processes and infrastructure
New York City General Assembly
According to the Columbia Journalism Review's New Frontier Database, "The New York City General Assembly (NYCGA) is the governing body of New York City’s Occupy Wall Street; it meets every evening at 19:00, where all the committees come and discuss their thoughts and needs. It is open to all who want to attend, and anyone can speak. And while there is no named leader, some of the members do routinely moderate the general assembly meetings. [Various volunteers] update the minutes from every meeting, along with other need-to-know information for organizers."[75]
Meetings and internal communications
There are two "general assembly" meetings a day for administrative type announcements. Powered audio amplification was prohibited early on in the protest, so communication amongst protestors is achieved through a "People's microphone" by which one person says something and those around him/her repeat it loudly.[76]
Media center
A separate section is set aside for an information/media area. this area contains laptop computers, camaras, gas-powered generators, and several wireless routers.[77][78] The generators also provide power for cell phones, and Internet access is available throughout Zucotti Park via these wireless routers.[79]
According to the Columbia Journalism Review's New Frontier Database, the media team, while unofficial, runs websites like Occupytogether.org, video livestream, a "steady flow of updates on Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr" as well as Skype sessions with other Occupy-themed protest sites such as in Scotland.[80]
Sanitation

The greywater treatment system used by the protesters to collect water for the park's plants
On 6 October, 2011, it was reported that Brookfield Office Properties, which owns Zuccotti Park, had issued a statement which said, "Sanitation is a growing concern... Normally the park is cleaned and inspected every weeknight... because the protestors refuse to cooperate... the park has not been cleaned since Friday, 16 September and as a result, sanitary conditions have reached unacceptable levels."[81]
Many protestors have taken to utilizing the bathrooms of nearby business establishments.[82]
One protester was photographed defecating on a police car and piles of trash were photographed throughout Zucotti Park.[83]
Sleeping arrangements
Somewhere between 100 and 200 people sleep in Zuccotti Park. Because tents are not allowed at Zucotti Park, the protestors that do decide to spend the night sleep in sleeping bags or under blankets. Some blankets and other supplies have been donated.[84]
Fiscal Impact
New York City's Police Commmisioner, Raymond Kelly, reported on 17 October, 2011 that Occupy Wall Street has cost the Police Department $1.9 Million in overtime.[85]
Chronology of events

Main article: Timeline of Occupy Wall Street

The protesters march toward a police station and various other targets
Planning for the event united disparate groups of protesters throughout the month of August, uniting a loose coalition set up around the Adbusters time and date with allies of the Spanish protests, members of Anonymous, and a group discussing the United States debt-ceiling crisis, which introduced the term "General Assembly" to the organizers.
Week 1 (September 17 – September 23)
On September 17, 1,000 protesters marched through the streets, with an estimated 100 to 200 staying overnight in cardboard boxes (tents being prohibited by the NYPD). By September 19, seven people had been arrested by the New York Police Department.[86] [87][87]
Week 2 (September 24 – September 30)
September 24 – Street marches, mesh nets, and first pepper-spraying incident

Protests on 15th day of the occupation
At least 80 arrests were made on September 24,[88] after protesters started marching uptown and forcing the closure of several streets.[89][90] Most of the 80 arrests were for blocking traffic, though some were also charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Police officers have also been using a technique called kettling which involves using orange nets to isolate protesters into smaller groups.[89][90]
On September 24 witnesses said they saw three women collapse on the ground screaming after they were pepper sprayed in the face. The incident took place near the intersection of 12th Street and University Place in Greenwich Village, during a march between Zuccotti Park and Union Square. Officials said that the protesters did not have a permit for the march. A video posted on YouTube and NYDailyNews.com shows uniformed officers had corralled the women using orange nets and one suddenly sprayed the women before turning and quickly walking away.[91][92]
Activists later published the name and contact details of the officer seen spraying the women with pepper spray, and encouraged members of the public to complain about his conduct.[93] The police officer who used the pepper spray was identified[94] as Anthony V. Bologna, a Deputy Inspector of the New York Police Department,[95][96][97][98][99] who was appointed C.O. of New York's First Precinct in 2005.[100] Bologna was previously named in a lawsuit alleging false arrest and civil rights violations after he ordered another officer to arrest a protester at the 2004 Republican national convention who had allegedly harassed a man and struck him with a rolled-up newspaper.[95]
Another woman who had been caught up in the net and pepper sprayed reported other incidents that she believed to be unnecessary use of police force.[101] Responding to the allegations, one police official said that Bologna was not aiming at the female protesters, but rather at male protesters who he believed were pushing officers and causing a confrontation that put officers at risk of injury.[102][103] The Police Department’s chief spokesman, Paul J. Browne, said the police had used the pepper spray “appropriately." According to the spokesperson, “Pepper spray was used once after individuals confronted officers and tried to prevent them from deploying a mesh barrier—something that was edited out or otherwise not captured in the video.”[103]
A second video posted on the political blog Daily Kos appeared to show another pepper spraying incident. According to the photographer, who was wearing his press card, he had been on East 12th Street and saw officers drag a woman from behind a net and throw her on the ground. He photographed the scene and then started walking away when he was sprayed. The photographer said that he was not sure who had sprayed him.[102]
Deputy Inspector Roy Richter, head of the Captains Endowment Association, a union representing high-ranking officers, said, "Deputy Inspector Bologna’s actions that day were motivated by his concern for the safety of officers under his command and the safety of the public. The limited use of pepper spray effectively restored order without any escalation of force or serious injury to either demonstrator or police officer." New York Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said that the NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau would examine the incident, but also criticized "tumultuous" protesters whom he called "disorderly" and "intent on blocking traffic" as they marched on University Place. The use of pepper spray is primarily limited to use against those resisting arrest or for protection, but is allowed to officers with special training for use in "disorder control".[102]
On September 25, the hacker group Anonymous released a video in which they threatened to launch a cyber-attack against the NYPD in response to the incident.[104] Both New York Police Department's Internal Affairs Bureau, and the office of the Manhattan district attorney, Cyrus Vance, Jr., opened investigations on the pepper-spraying.[102]
Week 3 (October 1 – October 7)

Occupy Wall Street protesters in Portland, Oregon.
March on Brooklyn Bridge and mass arrests
On October 1, 2011, protesters set out to march across the Brooklyn Bridge. The New York Times reported that more than 700 arrests were made.[105] The police used ten buses to carry protesters off the bridge. Jesse A. Myerson, a media coordinator for Occupy Wall Street said, “The cops watched and did nothing, indeed, seemed to guide us onto the roadway.”[106] However, some statements by protesters supported descriptions of the event given by police: for example, one protester tweeted that "The police didn't lead us on to the bridge. They were backing the fuck up."[27] A spokesman for the New York Police Department, Paul Browne, said that protesters were given multiple warnings to stay on the sidewalk and not block the street, and were arrested when they refused.[3] By October 2, all but 20 of the arrestees had been released with citations for disorderly conduct and a criminal court summons.[107] The following day, drivers of the City Bus program sued the New York Police Department for "commandeering their buses" and forcing them to cart detained protesters.[108]
October 5 – Second pepper-spraying incident
On October 5, joined by union members, students, and the unemployed, the demonstration swelled to the largest yet with an estimated 15,000 marchers joining the protest. Smaller protests continue in cities and on college campuses across the country.[109]
Thousands of union workers joined protesters marching through the Financial District. The march was mostly peaceful – until after nightfall, when scuffles erupted. About 200 protesters tried to storm barricades blocking them from Wall Street and the Stock Exchange. Police responded with pepper spray and penned the protesters in with orange netting.[110] According to the NYPD, 28 people were arrested.
Protests in the United Kingdom
Taking their cue from the Occupy Wall Street protests, a group of protesters are organizing an occupation of the London Stock Exchange to bring attention to what they see as unethical behavior on the part of banks. One of the organizers of the protest said the protests are focused against "increasing social and economic injustice in this country". In his opinion, "Since the financial crisis the Government has made sure to maintain the status quo and let the people who caused this crisis get off scot-free, whilst conversely ensuring that the people of this country pay the price, in particular those most vulnerable." The group is using Facebook to inform people of the event.[111][112]
Responses

Response from elected officials and political candidates
President Obama stated, "I think it expresses the frustrations the American people feel, that we had the biggest financial crisis since the Great Depression, huge collateral damage all throughout the country ... and yet you're still seeing some of the same folks who acted irresponsibly trying to fight efforts to crack down on the abusive practices that got us into this in the first place."[113][114][115] When Jake Tapper of ABC News pushed Obama to explain the fact that his administration hasn't prosecuted any Wall Street executives who didn't play by the rules, he replied, "One of the biggest problems about the collapse of Lehman's and the subsequent financial crisis and the whole subprime lending fiasco is that a lot of that stuff wasn't necessarily illegal; it was just immoral or inappropriate or reckless."[116][117]
Vice President Joe Biden likened the protest to the Tea Party, saying, “What are the people up there on the other end of the political spectrum saying? The same thing: ‘Look guys, the bargain is not on the level anymore.’ In the minds of the vast majority of the American – the middle class is being screwed.”[118]
U.S. Congressman and 2012 Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul (R-TX) expressed his support for the core demands of protests, as did fellow candidate Buddy Roemer.[119][120]
Independent Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who caucuses with the Democratic Party, appeared on Countdown with Keith Olbermann and supported the protests saying, “We desperately need a coming together of working people to stand up to Wall Street. We need to rebuild the middle-class in this country and you guys can’t have it all."[121]
The Democratic co-chairs of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Representatives Raúl Grijalva and Keith Ellison announced their solidarity with the movement on October 4.[122]
In an interview with The Washington Post, Former Democratic U.S. Senator Russ Feingold endorsed the movement on October 5 stating, "This is like the Tea Party – only it’s real...By the time this is over, it will make the Tea Party look like ... a tea party."[123]
Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain accused the movement of being "anti-capitalism" and argued "Don't blame Wall Street, don't blame the big banks, if you don't have a job and you're not rich, blame yourself!"[124] Republican Ron Paul came out to refute Cain by saying, "the system has been biased against the middle class and the poor...the people losing jobs, it wasn't their fault that we've followed a deeply flawed economic system."[125] In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Cain also expressed his belief that Occupation Wall Street was “planned and orchestrated to distract from the failed policies of the Obama administration”, but admitted that he “[didn’t’] have facts” to back up his accusation.[126]
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney called the protests "dangerous" and "class warfare".[127]
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va), in a speech to a Values Voter Summit, characterized the movement as “growing mobs” and suggested that President Barack Obama’s “failed policies” and rhetoric “condoning the pitting of Americans against Americans” were to blame. In response, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney noted Cantor’s apparent “hypocrisy unbound”, pointing out the Majority Leader’s support of the similarly rabble-rousing Tea Party and adding “I can't understand how one man's mob is another man's democracy. I think both are expressions that are totally consistent with the American democratic tradition."[128]
Response from the Federal Reserve
During a hearing before the Joint Economic Committee October 4, 2011, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said, "People are quite unhappy with the state of the economy and what’s happening.... Certainly, 9 percent unemployment and very slow growth is not a good situation."[129] Dallas Federal Reserve President Richard W. Fisher said, "We have too many people out of work. We have a very uneven distribution of income. We have a very frustrated people, and I can understand their frustration."[130]
Union support

On October 5 members of the National Nurses United union march to Foley Square in solidarity with OWS
Various unions, including the Transport Workers Union of America Local 100 and the New York Metro 32BJ Service Employees International Union have pledged their support for demonstrators.[67] On October 3, Transport Workers Union bus drivers sued the New York Police Department for ordering their buses to drive to the Brooklyn Bridge to pick up detained protesters. Union President John Samuelsen said, "We're down with these protesters. We support the notion that rich folk are not paying their fair share. Our bus operators are not going to be pressed into service to arrest protesters anywhere."[131] On October 5, representatives from more than 14 of the country's largest labor unions intended to join the protesters for a mass rally and march.[132]
Noting the growing union support, an article in the liberal Mother Jones magazine suggested the possibility that union support could splinter and derail the protests rather than sustain them because while unions are tightly organized, hierarchical, and run with a clear chain of command, Occupy Wall Street is the opposite in that they are "a horizontal, autonomous, leaderless, modified-consensus-based system with roots in anarchist thought". However, the article went on to suggest that joined together they could work to create a progressive movement that "effectively taps into the rising feeling among many Americans that economic opportunity has been squashed by corporate greed and the influence of the very rich in politics".[133]
Celebrity commentary

Naomi Klein leading an open forum on October 6
Educator and author Cornel West addressed the frustrations that some critics have expressed at the protest’s lack of a clear and unified message, saying, "It’s impossible to translate the issue of the greed of Wall Street into one demand, or two demands. We’re talking about a democratic awakening."[134]
On September 19, Roseanne Barr, the first celebrity to endorse the protest, spoke to protesters calling for a combination of capitalism and socialism and a system not based on "bloated talk radio hosts and that goddamn Ayn Rand book."[135][136]
Canadian writer Naomi Klein supported the protest, saying, "This is not the time to be looking for ways to dismiss a nascent movement against the power of capital, but to do the opposite: to find ways to embrace it, support it and help it grow into its enormous potential. With so much at stake, cynicism is a luxury we simply cannot afford."[137]
Filmmaker Michael Moore spoke against Wall Street, saying, "They have tried to take our democracy and turn it into a kleptocracy."[138][139]
Rapper Lupe Fiasco donated tents and a mobile sound system for the occupation; he also wrote a poem to help inspire the protesters.[140]
Susan Sarandon spoke at the demonstration saying, "I came down here to educate myself.... There's a huge void between the rich and the poor in this country."[141]
Other celebrities lending their support were Russell Simmons,[142] Anti-Flag,[143] Margaret Atwood, Noam Chomsky, Chris Hedges, Alec Baldwin, Radiohead,[144] and George Soros.[145] Nobel award winning economist Joseph Stiglitz and New York Times Columnist Jeff Madrick gave a teach-in on October 2.[146]
Comedian Jimmy Kimmel joked about the protest's lack of focus and approach, saying, "speaking of complaining... they say the best way to fight corporate greed is to make random people sit in traffic on their way to visit their aunt and uncle in Brooklyn on a Saturday."[147]
Media coverage

Prior to the event
Several commentators in the media and financial sector raised fears of unrest in the run-up to the event despite the organizers' insistence that the occupation would remain non-violent. In an interview with The New American, Ron Arnold of the Center for the Defense of Free Enterprise speculated that "American radicals are planning hundreds of simultaneous violent uprisings to topple our system of capitalism... I'm talking about anti-capitalist terrorists in our own country."[148]
Initial coverage

The lack of initial coverage was criticized by the protesters, but by October they needed to set up a press area to field inquiries
Protests began Saturday, September 17. That next Wednesday, local newsmagazine The New York Observer provided what they would later call “mildly skeptical coverage” of the nascent protests in Zuccotti Park occurring in the rain.[149][150]
On Friday, September 23, New York Times Metro Section “Big City” columnist Ginia Bellafante panned the movement, with paragraphs on a topless protestor, differences between planned and actual attendance figures, dwindling attendance figures, “hope for an infusion of energy,” statistics on the city’s wealth divide, and man on the street interviews with the protestors, most of whom, wrote Bellafante, “had indeed traveled from somewhere else” (e.g., “Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Missouri, Texas”)[151]
Five days into the protest political commentator and writer Keith Olbermann criticized New York newspapers and major news outlets[152] for failing to cover Occupy Wall Street, saying, "Why isn't any major news outlet covering this? ... If that's a Tea Party protest in front of Wall Street ..., it's the lead story on every network newscast."[153]
An article in the Boston Globe stated, "It’s hard to take a protest fully seriously when it looks more like a circus – some participants seem to have taken a chute straight from Burning Man."[154]
In a September 27 article, Mother Jones magazine strongly criticized the movement's lack of a clear message that can carry the movement forward, and the tactics of the Anonymous group. In their opinion, the movement has not yet been able to draw in a wide swath of Americans: "So far, this is more a movement for dreamers than for middle-class Americans trying to make ends meet."[155] Derek Thompson of The Atlantic argued that the protesters' goals would inherently be diverse because of the breadth of problems facing the middle class.[156]
On the September 30 episode of Real Time with Bill Maher in the New Rules segment, Maher, in a two-shot with a photo of two topless protesters, one with a sign reading "I didn't say look I said listen", remarked, "Those attractive, bare-breasted protesters on Wall Street must face the fact that going topless isn't going to draw attention to your cause and get you media exposure ... oh. I see what you did there. Well played, ladies, well played."[157][158]
Subsequent coverage

The Occupied Wall Street Journal's debut issue, founded by donations[159]
On October 1, during a segment on The O'Reilly Factor, a Fox News reporter remarked of the occupation that, "if you put every single left-wing cause into a blender, this is the sludge you’d get."[160] In a segment on The Sean Hannity Show, Sean Hannity alleged that, "All the talk the protesters were giving about class warfare came directly from President Obama" while Kimberly Guilfoyle who also appeared on the segment called the protestors "people with absolutely no purpose or focus in life."[160] After interviewing several protesters CNN reporter Erin Burnett criticized them saying, "They did know what they don't want...it seems like people want a messiah leader, just like they did when they anointed Barack Obama."[161][162] However, media theorist Douglas Rushkoff criticized Erin Burnett and other Fox News reporters for seemingly being determined to cast the protesters demands as the "silly blather of an ungrateful and lazy generation of weirdos" unsure even of what they are protesting.[163] Rushkoff recognizes the confusion over the protest's goals, however he suggests that, "it is difficult to comprehend a 21st century movement from the perspective of the 20th century politics, media, and economics in which we are still steeped". He says that as the first true Internet-era movement, it does not necessarily have a charismatic leader or particular endpoint, and he argues that unlike a traditional protest which identifies the enemy and fights for a particular solution, the protest is less about victory than sustainability, inclusion and consensus.[163]
On October 2, Arun Gupta, co-founder and general manager of the New York Indypendent newspaper, together with a group of journalists sympathetic to the Occupy Wall Street Movement, released the first issue of The Occupied Wall Street Journal, a free publication with stories, perspectives, and ideas from within the movement.[164][165]
In an editorial in the Jewish Commentary magazine, Senior editor Abe Greenwald referred to celebrities who supported the protests as "self-demonizing millionaires."[166] Conservative opinion columnist Ann Coulter, in comparing them with the tea party protestors wrote, "Tea partiers didn't block traffic, sleep on sidewalks, wear ski masks, fight with the police or urinate in public... Then they picked up their own trash and quietly went home. Apparently, a lot of them had to be at work in the morning."[167]
Appearing on CBS's The Early Show, Michael Daly, special correspondent for Newsweek and The Daily Beast, stated, "The one thing that runs through all of them is that a feeling that there is just a fundamental unfairness. From their point of view, the very people who almost wrecked the U.S. economy on Wall Street continue to get wealthy while working people are struggling to pay their bills. I mean, it comes down to that."[168]
Fox News reported that TENAC, an advocacy group for Latino housing, paid some of its protesters to picket at an event during the Occupy D.C. protest.[169]
On October 4, Kalle Lasn, one of the founders of Adbusters, in an article for msnbc.com stated that, "It seems like on the weekend it finally hit the mainstream, and it's become kind of a political left movement in the U.S., hopefully to rival the Tea Party".[170]

dw066 - oVdk & Bunk Data Discourse of the Otherにおいて我々がいおうと

Mike Starr Dead

the original Alice in Chains bassist who suffered a long battle with heroin addiction, was found dead on Tuesday. He was 44.
Starr's body was discovered at a private residence in Salt Lake City, but the cause of death remains unknown. "There is nothing to indicate that this was foul play by another individual," said authorities, according to The Guardian.

Shortly after the band's 1992 breakthrough album, "Dirt," Starr broke off from Alice in Chains midtour and was replaced by Black Sabbath bassist Mike Inez. Years later Starr admitted that his reason for departing was a growing drug addiction.
Here are five facts on the late grunge bassist.

1. His death marks a second tragedy for Alice in Chains
In April 2002, Alice in Chains founding vocalist Layne Staley, who also suffered from a severe heroin addiction, died of an overdose at his home in Seattle.

2. He was "Celebrity Rehab" patient
In 2009, Starr appeared on the third season of VH1's "Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew" along with actor Tim Sizemore and Dennis Rodman. Despite the medical attention he received, Starr appeared to still be struggling with addiction.

The following video features several clips from the show:

3. He was arrested three weeks ago
Starr was arrested on suspicion of felony possession of a controlled substance on Feb. 17 in Salt Lake City. He was held on $20,000 bail.

4. He also played in Sun Red Sun
Sun Red Sun was a heavy metal supergroup between 1992 and 1993 and featured Starr along with drummer Bobby Rondinelli (Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult), vocalist Ray Gillen (Badlands, Black Sabbath) and guitarist Al Romano (Joey Belladonna).

5. He will be missed by his fans and the rock community
Here are just a few of the comments from fellow musicians heartbroken by the loss:

Former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash:

Really tragic news about Mike Star.
