滝川英資（たきがわえいすけ）です。

マンハッタンはゴールドマンサックスや
モルガンスタンレー、メリルリンチ等の

アメリカを代表する金融会社の本拠地となっています。

そしてウォールストリート（ウォール街）という金融街も
ここマンハッタンにありますが、
ウォール街のウォールというのはその名のとおり
「壁」という意味です。

でもなんで壁なんていう名前が付いているんでしょうか？

Walking past the big iron fence around an insane asylum,
a guy heard someone inside chanting, "Eightteen! Eighteen!Eighteen!"

His curiosity piqued, he found two small holes on the fence and looked inside.

All of a sudden two finger shot through the holes and poked out his eyes,
and the inmates started wildly chanting....

"Nineteen! Nineteen! Nineteen...!"

現在のニューヨークに入植したオランダ人が
外敵からの攻撃に備えて木材の壁を作ったのが
始まりでした。

それからというものここには商人が集まって
非公式に木材の取引が行われていったのです。

できていったんですね。

金融や投資に興味がある人はこの映画がおすすめですよ。
アカデミー主演男優賞とラジー助演女優賞の
ダブル受賞です・・・

オリバーストーン監督の意図とは反対にこの映画を観て

今日は９月１１日です。

そして９月１１日はワールドトレードセンターが
テロリストの標的になった日ですが、皆さんは
ワールドトレードセンターがニューヨークのマンハッタン区に
あったというのはご存じだとは思いますが、
ではマンハッタンの名前の由来は知っていますか？

A woman in a cruise ship asked the captain.

“Excuse me, Captain, but as this is my first cruise,

I'm worried about if the boat doesn't sink.

マンハッタンはアメリカ先住民族の言葉で「丘の多い島」

を表したmannahateから来たと言われています。

ただいろいろと諸説あるようで、その中の一つは
マンハッタンを設計したのが秦という日本人だったので
Ｍａｎ　Ｈａｔａ（秦という男）から派生したというもの。

う～ん、どうなんでしょうか、私にはわかりませんがおもしろい話ですよね。

脱獄不可能な刑務所

あの脱出不可能と言われた連邦刑務所がありますが、
皆さんピンときますか？

Farmer Jim lived on a quiet rural highway.

But, as time went by, the traffic built up at an alarming rate.

The traffic was so heavy and so fast that his chickens were being
run over at a rate of three to six a day.

So he had the county workers put a sign that said:
SLOW: SCHOOL ZONE

But the 'school zone' sign didn't have no effect.

He had the county workers put up a new sign:
SLOW: CHILDREN AT PLAY

But this failed again.

He put up another sign by himself.

アルカトラズ刑務所はサンフランシスコ湾にあるアルカトラズ島に

あります。

脱出不可能と言われた刑務所、別名「ザ・ロック」ですが、
過去に34名が脱獄を試みました。

ほとんどは捕獲、射殺、もしくは溺死しましたが
5名が行方不明ということになっています。

この5名、もしかしたら・・・

さて、アルカトラズ刑務所を舞台にした映画はほとんど有名どころですが、
まだ見ていない人は要チェックですよ。

ちなみにアルカトラズはスペイン語で「ペリカン」という意味なんです。
ペリカンが多く生息していたのでアルカトラズと名付けられたんですね。

サンフランシスコはアメリカ西海岸沿いのとてもきれいな街で治安

もよく、住みたい街として常に上位ランクしています。

ここを舞台にした映画やドラマも多く、教育テレビで何度も放映されてきた
あのファミリードラマも実はカリフォルニアを舞台にしたドラマなんです。

There was a foreign lady who married an English gentleman and moved to London.

The lady was not very proficient in English,
but anyhow managed to communicate with her husband.

The real problem arose whenever she had to shop for groceries.

One day, she went to the butcher and wanted to buy pork legs.

She didn't know how to put forward her request,
and in desperation, lifted up her skirt to show her thighs.

The butcher got the message and she went home with pork legs.

The next day, she needed to get chicken breasts.

Again, she didn't know how to say,
and so unbuttoned her blouse to show the butcher her breast.

The lady got what she wanted.

The third day, the poor lady needed to buy sausages.

So she brought her husband to the store...

because he spoke English.

「フルハウス」はサンフランシスコにある一軒家で暮らす
ある家族の日常を描いたコメディードラマなんですが、
お笑いだけでなく家族愛もしっかり描かれた
とても内容の濃い教育ドラマでした。

私もこのドラマは好きでよく見ていましたが、
見終わった後に幸せに包まれるような
感覚をいつも受けていました。

ＤＶＤも出ているみたいなので、
まだ見ていない人にはオススメしたいですね。

ゴールデンゲートブリッジは観光と●●の名所

サンフランシスコの観光名所としてゴールデンゲートブリッジがあ

ります。

太平洋とサンフランシスコ湾がつながるゴールデンゲート海峡を渡る橋で、
サンフランシスコから北のマリンカウンティに抜ける唯一の道なんです。

ただできればあまり通りたくはない橋です。

A Swiss guy visited Sydney, Australia, and pulled up at a bus stop where two locals were waiting.
"Entschuldigung, koennen Sie Deutsch sprechen?" he asked.

The two Aussies just stared at him.

"Excusez-moi, parlez vous Francais?" he tried. The two continued to stare.

"Parlare Italiano?"

Other than a glance at each other, there was still no response.

"Hablan ustedes Espanol?"

Still nothing.

The Swiss guy gave up and drove off, extremely disappointed.

After he was gone, the first Aussie turned to the second and said,
"Y'know, maybe we should learn a foreign language."

"Why?" the other replied. "That guy knew four languages, and it didn't do him any good."

ゴールデンゲートブリッジは自殺の名所となっているんです。

死者は1000名近くに及んでいて生存率はおよそ２％

となっています。

何だか不気味ですよね、特に夜は絶対避けたいところです。

ちなみに実際に自殺するところを撮影した「ブリッジ」という映画があるんですが、
このブリッジはもちろんゴールデンゲートブリッジのことです。

One evening after work, a man drove a woman colleague home after
she had a little too much to drink.

Although nothing had happened, he decided not to mention it to his wife.

Later that night, the man and his wife were driving to a movie.

He spotted a high-heeled shoe hidden under the passenger's seat.

Pointing to something out the passenger window to distract his wife,
he picked up the shoe and tossed it out of his window.

その創設者の聖フランシスコの名前が
由来なんです。

実は「フランシスコ」自体にも意味があって、
これは「フランス風の」という意味なんです。

彼の父親がフランス語が堪能だったのでフランシスコの母親が
フランシスコと名付けたんだそうです。

動物もグランドキャニオンには1500種以上生息していますが、決して触れないようにしてくださいね。

これでアメリカと日本はどちらも民主党ということになりますが、
党の基本方針は異なります。

対する共和党は保守派だと言われています。

日本の政党だとリベラルは自民党、保守派は民主党だと言われています。

自民党は実際英語で"Liberal Democratic Party"と訳されます。

それに対して民主党は"Democratic Party of Japan"と訳されます。

アメリカの民主党議員と日本の民主党議員はほとんど交流がないなんてことも
耳にしますが、今後の日米関係はどうなっていくのか気になるところです。

あ、そうそう、決してビジネスの場で政治と宗教の話はしてはいけませんよ（笑）

実はカジノという言葉も英語ではないってご存じでしたか？

が付いた単語なんです。

想像より高いと感じたか安いと感じたかは人それぞれだと思いますが、
